Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel

The Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel is located on the remarkable Kohala Coast of the Big Island. The resort is situated on bluffs overlooking Hapuna Beach, one of the finest beaches you will find on the Big Island of Hawaii. Hapuna Beach offers a great environment to soak up some sun or snorkel in the blue Pacific.

There is much to love about the Hapuna Beach Resort; the beautiful beach, world class golf at both the Hapuna and Mauna Kea courses, reciprocal privileges with Mauna Kea Resort and all the beauty of the Kohala Coast of the Big Island. The Hapuna Beach Resort offers exceptional value in addition to the beauty and excitement of Hawaii's Big Island. If you are looking for a wonderful tropical resort that gives you beauty and tranquility for a fair price, make sure you check out the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel.

Here's our lowdown on Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel

- Our Favorites -

Hapuna Beach at Sunset
Hapuna Beach at Sunset

BEACH - If you are looking for a resort with a beautiful beach, you will find it at the Hapuna Beach Resort. The beach is beautiful, relaxing and the snorkeling was out of this world. We had the opportunity to swim with the Hawaiian Turtles which is always an amazing experience. There is plenty of room to walk on the beach and soak up the scenery. Remember that you have privileges at Mauna Kea. We just took the shuttle (5 min. ride) and were able to get set up at world famous Mauna Kea beach. We had a great time relaxing, snorkeling and soaking up the beautiful sun.

PRICE/VALUE - In today's world where so many resorts are so expensive, it is refreshing to find a resort that offers both luxury and value. While the Hapuna is a beautiful, beachfront property, the prices were definitely not 5 star rates. We really enjoyed the resort and were able to do without some of the "5 star" extras because we felt we were getting exceptional value. If you are looking for exceptional value in a luxury resort, Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel should be high on your list.

GOLF - While staying at the Hapuna Beach Resort, you will have access to both the Hapuna Golf Course and Mauna Kea Golf Course, which is located next door at the sister Mauna Kea Beach Hotel.

Hapuna Beach Golf Course
Hapuna Beach Golf Course

The Hapuna Golf Course was designed by Arnold Palmer and features lava dunes and native grass that gives it a links golf feel. You still have great views of the brilliant blue Pacific Ocean, but it definitely gives a different feel from many Hawaiian seaside courses. I would rate this course as more playable for the higher handicap player, but it is still a visually stunning course. Don't be afraid to give this course a try if you are looking for a little more forgiving course than Mauna Kea. The course was also in great shape with well maintained fairways, tees and rough and very true greens. Playing both courses will allow you to experience two different and distinct feels of Hawaiian golf.

Hole #3 Mauna Kea
#3 at Mauna Kea
over the Pacific Ocean!

The Mauna Kea Golf Course is the more famous of the two courses and was designed by the celebrated golf architect Robert Trent Jones. For me, the course is defined by its signature hole, #3, a wonderful par 3 that plays across the crashing Pacific Ocean to a green that seems suspended over the water. It's a magnificent hole that is stunningly beautiful and one you will never forget (I won't after hitting in the ocean!). Hole #11 offers beautiful views of the Pacific and plays from an elevated tee to an oceanside green. Mauna Kea Golf Course is a demanding layout that is long and tough with many elevation changes. The course was in beautiful shape when I played and it was a special experience. Tough but fair, this course is one of the finest golf experiences in the Hawaiian Islands.

DON'T MISS :
Reciprocal privileges at Mauna Kea Beach Hotel
- A really nice feature that Hapuna guests enjoy is the reciprocal privileges with Mauna Kea Beach Hotel. There is a free shuttle that runs between the resorts. This is great because it is almost like staying at two resorts. You can change things up and enjoy the beach and snorkeling at Mauna Kea. You can play both golf courses and enjoy all the dining options that Mauna Kea offers. Experience two distinctive properties for the price of one is an opportunity we would never miss.

- Other Good Stuff -

Pool at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel
Pool at Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel

Pool - The Hapuna Beach resort offers a beautiful pool that has exceptional views of Hapuna Beach. The service and "vibe" of the pool is a friendly, comfortable and laid back in spirit of aloha. We had a great time sitting back and enjoying the sun and a tropical cocktail from the pool side bar (be careful, the drinks are delicious but potent!).

Hawaiian Sea Turtle Swimming SNORKELING - At Hapuna Beach Resort you have amazing snorkeling directly in front of the resort. We snorkeled just off the bluffs, right below the resort. We saw many brilliantly colored fish and even got the opportunity to swim with the magnificent Hawaiian Sea Turtles. The cove is well protected and very comfortable for snorkeling, no matter what your level of ease is in the water. Another great place to snorkel is in front of the Mauna Kea Resort. Mauna Kea is Hapuna's sister resort and you have reciprocal privileges, including a free shuttle that drops you off right to the front of the Mauna Kea. This made it very easy to enjoy the wonderful snorkeling at world famous Mauna Kea beach. The snorkeling at both resorts is wonderful and everything is right at your fingertips. All you have to do is enjoy the natural beauty of the Kohala Coast of the Big Island.

Bar/Lounge - If you are looking for a drink at Hapuna you have several options. The Beach Bar is located poolside and offers a great place to get a refreshing drink and enjoy the beautiful views of Hapuna Beach. The Reef Lounge is an open air lounge that sits high in the resort affording sweeping views of Hapuna Beach. This is a great place to watch the sunset. They had live Hawaiian music for our sunset, which was very relaxing. They make a good drink and you get your money's worth. We found the lounges a very enjoyable feature of the Hapuna Resort.

Room - The rooms at the Hapuna Beach Hotel were very well appointed and good sized. The bathrooms were roomy, will appointed and had a soaking tub. While the tub was separate from the shower, this was not what we call a "deep soaker tub". This was disappointing as I love a nice bubble bath and really look forward to a deep, luxurious soaking tub. Our room was very comfortable but we wished there were a few more Hawaiian accents that we believe would really have improved the feel.

- And Our Not So Favorite Things -

Service - We found the staff friendly and courteous at the Hapuna, but we felt they were missing that extra that we are used to in a luxury property. The service was good and all our needs were meet promptly and courteously. But the service was not what we have experienced at other luxury properties. But you get great value at this resort, so our overall experience was perfectly acceptable.

Dining - The food at the Hapuna was average. We did not have a bad experience, but there was nothing remarkable about our meals. We did not try Mauna Kea, so that might be an option if you are looking for a little more from your food options. If you are a real "foodie", you will probably want to check out some of the other dining options on the island.

When we travel, we always look for the best deal and do not mind traveling during the off season to get the lower prices. This means we may not get to travel at the optimal times based on Temperatures and Rainfall (see charts below). At Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel the prices do not vary as greatly during the year as at other properties. You can get good values at the Hapuna Beach Prince, especially compared to other properties on the Big Island.

Times when the prices are higher at Hapuna...

... The Holiday Seasons in mid Dec - Early January are when you get the highest prices.

Weather on the Big Island of Hawaii

The weather on the Big Island is very diverse. There can be snow on Mauna Kea, a downpour in Hilo and dry weather on the Kohala coast. Fortunately ... if you like beautiful, dry weather ... the Hapuna Beach Resort is located on the leeward side of the island which gets the least rain. You get some of the best weather in the world on the Kohala coast of the Big Islands. The deep, warm ocean keeps the temperatures very stable year round. The Big Island is big ... as big as all other Hawaiian islands combined, so you can get different weather in different parts of the island. Lucky for us that Hapuna Beach Resort sits in an area that gets some of the best weather year round!

Rainfall - Whenever we go on vacation, trying to avoid rain is always high on our list. My husband is especially fanatical about this. As the chart at the right shows, you get the least amount of rain in the summer months. This is the high seasons so prices may be a bit higher and it may be a little crowded, but if you want to avoid rain, this is your best bet. Keep in mind that the Kohala coast does not get a lot of rain regardless of the time of year. So if avoiding rain on your luxury tropical vacation is high on your list, Hapuna Beach Resort is a great option!

Chart of Temperatures at Puako

Temperature - The chart at the right shows the average temperatures for Puako (which is very close to the Hapuna Beach Resort). As you would expect the average temperatures (as well as the humidity) increase in the June-October time frame. The trade winds that blow from the northeast are a welcome relief to the summer heat. The weather on the Big Island, like all of Hawaii is moderate and gorgeous the entire year round. If you are looking for sensational warm, tropical weather whenever you choose to take your vacation, the Kohala Coast of the Big Island is a perfect choice.

Before you go The Big Island, or anywhere in the Hawaiian Islands, it is always wise to keep a watch on the weather.

Hurricanes are not common for the Hawaiian Islands. Still, it is always good to keep watch on the weather before you leave for your tropical vacation.
